Science Zone
Students at West Walsall are treated as scientists, with the focus on students finding out and not being told.
The academy embraces the philosophy that science is a world-changing discipline and therefore a most exciting subject. Students are treated as scientists and encouraged to draw conclusions about the natural world by observing and experimenting, and by testing out scientific theories in practice. This is incorporated into all lessons, yearly plans and key stages and focuses on students ‘finding out’ not ‘being told’ as a method of learning.
In Key Stage 3, we deliver science in a thematic approach covering areas such as medicine, the science of cooking and forensics, developing the skills required to be good scientists. These include writing reports, delivering presentations, working together in groups and, of course, practical skills through experimentation – skills required to be successful in Key Stages 4 and 5.
In Key Stage 4 we increasingly operate a three-year GCSE or BTEC programme to allow all students the best opportunity to succeed. We are focused around the individual needs of students and continue to adapt our curriculum to match them. Students with the dedication to be the very best of scientists have the opportunity to study triple or double award sciences.
In this model, students specialise in two or three disciplines of physics, chemistry or biology. Students are expected to develop the excellent numeracy, literacy and communication skills needed to allow them to achieve the very highest grades in their examinations at the end of Year 11.
For students who seek a more general education, the BTEC Applied Science course is available. This course is more suited to those students who work consistently over a long period. BTEC Science is delivered through a 75% coursework element and 25% examination. The course consists of report writing, experimental write-ups and presentations which prepare students thoroughly for the world of work.
All students should consider science at A level as an excellent progression route for all abilities and career aspirations. Above all, we want to allow students to discover the natural world around them and to make this an inspirational, aspirational and enjoyable experience.
