English

Students, regardless of prior attainment, are nurtured, encouraged and supported to develop through the English curriculum, and beyond.

Each student knows his or her own targets and progresses through an individualised learning package, based on need. We challenge learners in Key Stage 3 to develop the skills needed for Key Stage 4 and 5 and beyond; our aim is to promote and embed in our students the desire to be life-long learners.

Our dedicated team of English specialists provide lessons which encourage, motivate and challenge learners. Lessons are exciting, engaging and innovative and learning is enhanced by educational visits, challenge days, clubs and competitions. We want our students to be part of the global community and to be prepared for life.

Modern Foreign Languages

In Year 7, students study French and Spanish, building on their prior language learning in primary school, then continue with one of these languages throughout KS3. In KS4, students may opt to continue studying either, or both, of these languages to GCSE.

With the introduction of the English Baccalaureate in KS4, higher achieving students are required to study a GCSE in a modern foreign language (MFL). This could be French, Spanish or the student’s home language, for which exam support and guidance is provided.

We believe that it is important to use language for a real purpose – and are fortunate to host a foreign language assistant as well as having links with schools in France and Spain with whom students can practise their language skills.

Activities outside the academy day include Urdu classes (teaching up to GCSE and A level) which are very popular, even attracting students from other schools. We also offer a multilingual class where students use web-based resources to study a language of their choice.

Recent enhancement activities have included language-themed events at local universities, a two-day trip to Disneyland Paris and a three-day visit to the French Opal Coast where students excelled at making croissants and tasted many French delicacies.
